CITY65 Music, the movement behind this year’s inaugural CITY65 Music Festival celebrating homegrown music, is delighted to announce the much-anticipated return of the Living-Room Sessions to Blu Jaz Café on 20 October 2017.
The CITY65 Living-Room Sessions are a series of intimate events showcasing local talents and their music – to further the future of made-in-Singapore music.
After July’s hugely successful Femme Fatale Edition, the Living-Room Sessions return this October with the Storytellers Edition. It features a killer line-up of three exceptionally talented local bands who will take you on a soulful musical journey – Singapore-based French-Mauritian singer-songwriter Jonathan Meur, nu-folk band Firefly Search Party and retro-blues super band The Sunburst Express.
Jonathan Meur’s stories start the night, his lilting, soaring vocals, and beautiful arrangements drawing inspiration from his childhood.
Firefly Search Party takes us to the next chapter with layers of harmonies, percussion and toe-tapping guitar rhythms telling tales of love, life, laughter and loss.
The final protagonist – The Sunburst Express. A group of outstanding musicians, their coming together is also the culmination of their own stories, combining their years of individual musical experience to write together, letting their vibe and the music do the storytelling as they traverse eras and genres.
CITY65 Music founder Mike Spinks said: “The relaxed ambience and intimate setting of Blu Jaz Café’s third floor gives people the perfect opportunity to actually get to know the musicians on stage – to step inside their songs and hear their stories. Each of these up-and-coming bands are wonderful storytellers in their own right, and I’m excited for new audiences to get to know them.”
The Storytellers Edition takes place on Friday, 20 October, at Blu Jaz Café (3rd floor). The session starts at 7.30pm with a $10 entry fee at the door. Blu Jaz Café is located at 11 Bali Lane, Singapore 189848.
Jonathan Meur is a VIMA-nominated Singapore-based French-Mauritian singer-songwriter addicted to the creative process. A fusion of folk, pop, rock and classical, his music has drawn comparisons to the likes of Sufjan Stevens and Regina Spektor.
He released his debut EP Woodnotes in 2013, followed by the full-length album How to Build a Kite in 2015. He has performed at the prestigious Mosaic Music Festival, Singapore Night Festival, Singapore Writers Festival, and the inaugural 100 Bands Festival. He is currently planning the release of a new single. For this Living-Room Session, he’ll be joined by Ronald Goh on guitar and vocals, Jon Low on bass and Yulin Quek on drums.
Firefly Search Party is a four-piece band comprising local singer Dian Harun (who also plays a mean tambourine), Wisconsin-born Nathan Frye on guitar and vocals, Briton Mike Sutcliffe on drums and, their newest addition, the ever-so-smooth Khalis Jalil on lead guitar. Inspired by the nu-folk movement of the past few years and Americana of years gone by, their original tunes are driven by a good story, foot-stomping rhythm, a harmonic blend of melodies and guitar leads that add a little edge and flavour.
The Sunburst Express boasts some of the finest talent in the Singapore music scene. Comprising Leonard Ng (Sabby and the Cats), drummer Zachary Liu, keyboardist and vocalist Ben Jacob Lee (The Astronauts) and guitarist and vocalist Khalis Jalil, the group’s influences are diverse, and include classics such as The Rolling Stones, Creedence Clearwater Revival, B.B. King and Cat Stevens.
Familiar faces to some, these guys have graced the stages at Crazy Elephant, The Esplanade, Hard Rock Café, BeerFest Asia, Singapore Night Festival and SHINE Festival, to name but a few. The Burst’s retro sound will take you back to a time when the living was easy and everything was cool. Slipping easily between classic rock, Americana, and the universal appeal of old-time blues and soul, the vibe from this band will leaving you feeling good for the rest of the weekend. Guaranteed!
