Partnering the ArtScience Museum for the first time, the National University of Singapore’s (NUS) Communication and New Media (CNM) students will be organising the sixth installation of Random Blends 2014, an annual Interactive Media Works Exhibition. Showcasing the best works by students, Random Blends is a burst of dynamic new media works that will premiere on March 1, 2014 at the Marina Bay Sands.

About Random Blends 2014

Held at the ArtScience Museum from March 1 to March 6, Random Blends 2014 will showcase a wildly varied collection of new media poster designs, interactive stories, computer and board games, comics and video productions by students from the CNM department. The CNM department, which offers a spectrum of modules that are tailored to an ever-changing media landscape, welcomes the public to get up close and personal with the showcased works.

This year, the exhibits were selected based on the theme, ‘Calibr8’– a play on the word ‘Calibrate’. ‘Calibr8’ redefines the relationship between the visitors and the exhibits in the museum space. With a smorgasbord of art, technology, media and entertainment, the exhibition seeks to challenge visitors’ preconceived notions of issues in our contemporary society. The gallery will focus on experiential learning by departing from traditional static displays and providing visitors a hands-on opportunity to engage with the immersive exhibits and also with fellow visitors.

Visitors can interact with each other through a website specially designed for Random Blends 2014 by CNM students. On the website, visitors can solve mind-boggling riddles, created by fellow visitors, on the exhibits, or come up with their own riddles for others to solve. The website, which will be available throughout the exhibition, will also provide more details on the exhibits. Visitors can access the website on their own phones to join in the fun when viewing the exhibits.

A featured exhibit of this year is an interactive comic titled “‘Se7en the Reaper”. This comic parodies the 1995 movie, Se7en, which tells of a serial killer whose murders relate to the seven deadly sins: Gluttony, Pride, Lust, Wrath, Sloth, Greed and Envy. This narrative offers visitors a calibrated perspective to viewing this movie in a modern day context by commodifying the sins to include over-indulgence in electronic devices as Gluttony and public display of affection as Lust.
