‘Its Sizzling’ – Why you need to go watch this musical entertainer!
It is week 14 and everyone is saturated. The textbooks are getting heavier and the term papers to be submitted are growing in number. What you need is a break (or you know, a bunch of deadline extensions). Since the extensions seem unlikely, why not take a breather and watch a wonderful play put up by students just like you?
From 8 to 10 pm on November 7, 2012, NUS DramaWorks will be staging its highly entertaining production ‘Its Sizzling’ at the Kent Ridge Guild House. Nowadays, television shows like ‘Glee’ have made musicals all the rage, and this play is a musical too! More importantly, this musical claims to “draw out the tension between the old and the modern in (Singaporean) society” with humour and laughter. So you are getting a social message, but in a light-heart way that is sure to leave you tapping your foot along to the music!
‘Its Sizzling’ is an interactive play – it promises to engage the audience at all times. It is set in the fictional ‘Katong cabaret’. Julie, the widow who owns this cabaret, is fretting about her dwindling business and audiences who are fast losing interest. This Mando-pop cabaret is simply not cutting it anymore. What it needs is – you guessed it – a makeover. Who better to do that than Julie’s step-daughter, Michelle? Michelle is given the mammoth task of transforming the Mando-pop cabaret to a modern Burlesque one. Who will snag the coveted main role in this cabaret? Who will fall in love with whom in the process? (Come on, there has to be a love story!) Will Michelle’s cabaret ‘makeover’ ensure success for Julie? Watch ‘Its Sizzling’ to find out!
Tickets are selling at SGD 12 for NUS students and SGD 15 for non-students. NUS DramaWorks is also running a contest of sorts – Guess the new star of the ‘Katong cabaret’ and stand to win exciting prizes!
