Philadelphia Christcentred Fellowship – Our First Clinic

PCF 1 PCF 2

Patients from surrounding areas of residence, including the North Cemetery, were already at the Church for medical consultation by the time we arrived. On top of running a clinic, which served 32 patients that day, health education was also given to the patients collectively. Common issues plaguing them such as diabetes and hypertension were addressed, and tips were given to nip their conditions in the bud. We also gave out gift hampers personally and individually to 75 families from the North Cemetery. These gift hampers were purchased with the monetary donations that were so kindly extended to us.

Matutum Squatter Settlement – Clinic within a School

MSS 1 MSS 2

Comprising mainly of makeshift, zinc-roofed housing, this squatter settlement provided little shelter and sustenance for its occupants. When we were there, a funeral was being held – an elderly had passed on but the family had difficulty raising enough funds for proper burial of their dead. Such was the poverty that entrapped the community. While we were there, we were able to bless 99 patients with medical care and treatment through our clinic, as well as educate the children of the community regarding dental health and other basic hygiene habits that would go a long way in protecting their health.

Aetas Tribe – Bridging the Gap

This community, which is one of the many tribes that occupy the hills, was accessed after a 3 hour long drive from the heart of the City of Manila. After crossing a rather precarious bridge, we took a survey of the place and were glad to find that 2 toilets have been newly built! We are glad to say that one of them was funded by donations from the previous trip made by our pioneering seniors.  A clinic was then set up, and within a few hours, we were able to serve 107 patients, and another 12 patients who sought dental treatment (mainly tooth extraction). After the clinic, we distributed food to the people. A simple but hearty meal comprising an egg, a hotdog, rice and a nutritious vitamin drink was well-received by the people there. Gift packs to 80 families were also left in the church within the community. We were then pleasantly surprised with a tribal dance performed by a few members of the Aetas Tribe. We had such a blessed time with the community and look forward to future opportunities in serving them again.

Boys’ Town – A Rowdy Good Time

bt1 bt2 bt3

At the Boys’ Home, we were greeted by a rowdy bunch of boys who were of wide age-range. Speaking to them and organizing them would not have been possible without the help of church members and volunteers who were so generous, effective and thorough in their help. With them, we were able to teach the children proper handwashing techniques, and educate them on hygiene and its importance. In light of the Christmas season, we performed a song for them, and led them in a time of communal singing and dancing. After that, we had playtime! Laughter rose from the place as the boys, in their various groups, enjoyed themselves with games such as musical chairs, poison ball and amoeba tag! Food was then given out to each child, along with sweets, biscuits and other snacks, which brought a smile to their faces.
