Over S$100m raised by NUS for educational initiatives to celebrate Lee Kuan Yew’s 90th birthday
In honour of Singapore’s Founding Prime Minister Mr Lee Kuan Yew’s 90th birthday this year, NUS and the Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) have raised more than S$100 million each for educational initiatives. Part of the amount raised by NUS will go towards supporting bursaries, scholarships and study awards, allowing students to pursue their courses regardless of their financial background.
A Lee Kuan Yew Endowed Fund has also been set up which offers bursaries for financially needy students. Financial assistance provided to such students in the University will augment as the fund grows over time.
In addition, the funds will advance the development and enhancement of programmes at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, University Town, Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine and Yale-NUS College.
Parts of NUS Campus flooded after heavy morning showers at Kent Ridge area
Heavy rain descended over central and western parts of Singapore on 5 September and the NUS campus grounds was not spared as a wall of water (literally) nearly engulfed a part of the bus stop near Kent Ridge MRT Station. Students were seen to have taken off their footwear to get to the bus stop and taking alternative routes to avoid getting themselves soaked.
Meanwhile at the faculty of science, rainwater reached knee-level and even cascaded off higher-tier floors into the basement. Staff working at the engineering faculty said the water level was at least ankle-deep.
It is no wonder that the heaviest rainfall recorded that morning was at Kent Ridge with a rainfall of 102.8mm from 8.10am to 9.40am. It peaked between 8.15am to 8.50am, with a rainfall of 82.2mm.
