Reinventing NUS education and campus spaces

NUS President Professor Tan Chorh Chuan has announced that the University will rev up efforts to help students “develop strong personal qualities and character crucial for their effectiveness and success in the future” and create enabling spaces that “increase the vibrancy of the campus, spark new ideas and collaborations, and enhance experiential learning”. He shared these new developments at the annual State of the University Address on 11 October 2013 at the University Cultural Centre Theatre.

Some of the new educational initiative unveiled include an expansion of residential college learning at NUS’ University Town (UTown), a new Ridge View Residential College programme,  and the “internal Blended Learning Online Courses” (mostly for those who have completed National Service). New spaces can also be expected by 2016 like a new Academic Green at Faculty of Science, a 7 storey building at Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, and a new University Sports Centre, complete with a covered Olympic-sized swimming pool, fitness lab, sports halls, squash courts, and eateries.

CSI Singapore finds new way to “switch on” silenced tumour suppressors

A group of researchers from the Cancer Science Institute of Singapore (CSI Singapore) at NUS and the Harvard Stem Cell Institute has made a major discovery that could pave the way towards developing fresh approaches for the treatment of diseases such as cancer. Headed by Professor Daniel Tenen, Director of CSI Singapore, their breakthrough work was published online in the journal Nature on 10 October 2013.

Student group of the week

NUS Mensa

Mensa is the largest, oldest and best known high-IQ society in the world. NUS Mensa is the student branch of Mensa Singapore formed in academic year 1997/1998.  Since then, the club has grown in strength and has seen active membership by undergraduates. It has also received enthusiastic support from the alumni and Mensa Singapore. NUS Mensa is primarily a networking society, bringing students from different faculties together. We interact on the platform of a meeting of brilliant minds, regardless of whether one was from the Arts & Social Sciences, Business, Computing, Dentistry, Design & Environment, Engineering, Law, Medicine or Science. Our society consists of members from all of these schools, giving a wide spectrum of ideas and opinions.

If you’re looking forward to joining NUS Mensa, join them for a chill-out evening with plenty of fun, games, music, food and drinks on 16 October 2013, 6.30pm at the YIH Student Lounge.
