Zebrafish study sheds light on slowing down liver cancer
From the NUS Mechanobiology Institute and Department of Biological Sciences, NUS scientists have discovered that the progress of liver cancer can be slowed down by “switching on” a group of small proteins named Rho. Unprecedented in the research world, the team produced evidence using the zebrafish as a model as its genes function quite similarly to a human’s. The breakthrough work published in the journal Oncogene may spearhead the development and application of therapeutics targeted at liver cancer. With Associate Professor Low Boon Chuan heading the team of researchers, they aim to establish zebrafish as a possible screening platform for new drugs.

Student group of the week
NUS Stage
Founded in 2008, NUS Stage is a university wide English language theatre group at NUS.
NUS Stage welcomes theatre enthusiasts, at every level of experience, yearning for deeper learning and involvement in theatre. They seek to nurture creative talents in writing, directing, acting, and production through committed training and practice. Recognizing the artistry capacity of NUS students, they look forward to writing and staging original works, for the student population and theatre scene in Singapore.
In addition to productions, a playwriting class is also conducted by Huzir Sulaiman. He will mentor members of NUS Stage, who are interested in playwriting, to help them finish and revise their own plays for the group to produce during the following year.
Are you looking forward to direct a play?
Now, NUSStage is calling for young, new directors wannabes to join them in their event Chamber Readings: part two.
Chamber Readings is an effort by NUSStage to provide first time experience for new actors and directors in a play. There will be less focus on the ‘tech’ side such as the lightings and sounds so as to give more attention on the acting and directing parts. Chamber Readings: part two is going to be conducted in semester 2 of AY2013/2014.
If interested, please contact them at nusstage@gmail.com for more details or head on down to their Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/nusstage or their website at http://nusstage.wordpress.com/.
Curator for next week
Name: Tan Sze-Ern
Biography: A year 3 student in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, she calls herself an egg-scrambling professional, a tea enthusiast, purveyor of puns, unapologetically loud, occasionally trite, aspiring juggler (of time and commitments), unfortunate member of sleep-deprivation, with a curiously great propensity of making bad decisions. She hopes to provide an interesting, possibly entirely unique insight, into life as an undergraduate.
