NUS rolls out ‘grade-free’ system for its freshmen

In a bold move to encourage first-year students to take on more “exploratory” modules while simultaneously reduce the unhealthy obsession with grades, NUS decided to do away with the grading system and have only a distinction, pass, or fail reflected at the end of the semester instead.

With less emphasis placed on the significance of grades, it would also provide   students with more freedom to discover themselves while venturing on non-academic pursuits.

This “grade-less” initiative is already taking place in the medical school and pilot schemes are being planned for the new academic year. However, the revamp will take years to complete.

I can’t believe I still whip out my EZ-link card whenever I board the NUS shuttle bus. And I’ve graduated from #NUS for two years already.
