Are you in desperate need for a getaway? Here are a few ideas for some recess week getaways beyond our sunny island!

1) George Town, Penang

Just over an hour’s flight away from the Lion City, Penang boasts more than fantastic food and historic charm. Lonely Planet dubs Malaysia’s food capital as ‘synonymous with street art’ – hold on, how legitimate is it, you may wonder? As they often say, art is subjective – but yours truly would gladly stroll along these streets, with a camera and a Mang Chang Kuih on both hands, until the sun decides to rest.

Things to do: Stay at Kamasutra Studio, a boutique hotel nestled along Jalan Dato Koyah. Explore Lebuh Keng Kwee for the famous Kah Kah Fried Oyster and afterwards, Penang Road Teochew Chendol Shop – they serve a decent Penang Rojak as well. Visit Anson Road for its Mang Chang Kuih, or Penang Pancake, located in front of Lok Pin Coffee Shop. Stroll along the local street art scene on Armenian Street and click the shutters away.

2) Bangkok, Thailand

Jump on a cheap flight to BKK this weekend (hint: Scoot) to revel in the vibrancy of Chatuchak Weekend Market. A place that made my eyes grow shamelessly bigger than my stomach (or luggage) – and yes, I am talking food, clothes and accessories. Simply because they are so pretty but still affordable! Bargain your way to that last piece of handmade necklace – just be careful with your belongings! Another thing that always keeps me on my toes is the hygiene standards of Bangkok’s food stalls and restaurants. Sure, they are very yummy, but remember to pack a few charcoal pills – better safe than sorry!

3) Hong Kong

Now, for the lush and luxurious of our generation – the city of the Asian fashionistas and influencers. Hong Kong’s central districts are vibrant and lively; especially at Lan Kwai Fong, its most popular nightlife zone. Feast during breakfast, lunch, tea-time, and dinner to your heart’s content without worrying about GST charges – just worry about how much feasting you can handle!

Things to do: Queue early for dimsum breakfast at the Michelin-rated Tim Ho Wan, or visit Sheng Kee Congee for a signature local dish. Head to the ifc mall for a diverse retail and dining options for the afternoon, and take the elevator up for a rooftop view of the Central’s waterfront. Make your way back to the hotel, or  for a tea-time break before heading to T’ang Court at The Langham for an intensely satisfying five-course dinner (yes, it might burn a hole through your pocket, but it is worth it – I promise). Experience the locals’ zest of life at Lan Kwai Fong and be ready to dance the night away.

4) Tanjung Bira, Indonesia

For the semi-adventurous souls, head down to South Sulawesi, Indonesia to get as much pristine beaches as your heart fancies. The helpful locals will bring you to where the diving sites and snorkelling spots are – so just come prepared with a truckload of sunblock! Do check the weather forecast for this weekend, though – the climate has been erratic thus far.

Things to do: Arrive at the Sultan Hasanudin International Airport and take a road trip to Bira. Stay at Bira Beach Resort. Find a local Mie Pangsit restaurant and have a hearty lunch. Dive all day at Laut Flores, and tell the boatmen to take you to see the Green Turtle Conservancy. Explore the vicinity and hunt for the seafood restaurant which gives you the best kind of vibes.
