Pharmacy students bag award for community service

The North West Community Development Council (CDC) has recognised the NUS Pharmaceutical Society’s (NUSPS) work among senior citizens by conferring on it a WeCare @ North West Award at the North West Volunteers’ Night 2014 on 2 March. NUSPS is the student body representing the University’s pharmacy undergraduates.

In the last three years, the North West CDC, NUSPS and registered pharmacists from the Pharmaceutical Society of Singapore (PSS) have helped 700 residents in the Northwest area through their “Know Your Medicines, Get it Right! @ Northwest” programme. For this outreach programme, they partnered with voluntary welfare organisations, neighbourhood links, senior activity centres and North West Grassroots Organisations in providing one-on-one advice to elderly beneficiaries, reviewing their medication and educating them on proper use of the drugs. PSS also received a WeCare Award this year for its contributions in the programme.

Besides helping the elderly to maximise the therapeutic effects of their medication, the programme also serves to educate the public about the role of pharmacists as trustworthy medication advisors and caring partners in health management. Through working with the pharmacists, students gain opportunities, not only to apply their drug knowledge and practise their patient counselling and communications skills, but also to foster closer relations with pharmacists.
